Founded in Melbourne in 2000 by guitarist, producer and songwriter Lance Ferguson and featuring the vocals of the incredible Kylie Auldist, nine-piece powerhouse The Bamboos have continually redefined Australian Soul music. Amid a glut of revivalists re-treading retro waters, the band have carved out a signature sound recognized around the world that weaves classic arrangements seamlessly with current influences, creating something altogether brand new.
Not only have they received five ARIA Awards and three APRA Music Awards nominations over their nine studio albums, they have long been regarded as one of Australia’s best live bands, regardless of genre. They’ve stormed the stages at key festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Meredith, Bluesfest, WOMADelaide and Falls Festival.
Beyond their already strong global fanbase millions of people are now familiar with the infectious guitar playing of Ferguson and with Bamboos vocalist Kylie Auldist, thanks to them featuring on the global smash single “This Girl” by Kungs Vs. Cookin’ On 3 Burners. The remix by the French producer of the 2009 track by the trio that Ferguson was then also part of, has been a multi platinum seller, hitting #1 in numerous countries around the world, and cracking the top 30 in 35 more. It also garnered a ‘Song Of The Year’ nomination at the 2016 ARIA Awards.
2018’s triumphant ‘Night Time People’ album was followed up by 2019’s album of orchestral reimaginings of Bamboos classics, ‘By Special Arrangement’. “Hard Up”, released in May 2020 is the band’s first new music, with the promise of more to come. 2020 also marks the band’s 20th anniversary. There are celebrations planned to mark the occasion, the first of which is a limited double 7” single for Record Store Day. They are also regularly posting rarely seen videos, photos, alternate covers and other ephemera from 20 years of funk.
